During childhood, the number of boys and girls affected by depression is almost equal. However, in adolescence, twice as many females as males are diagnosed and more than one half of depressed teenagers of both genders will have a recurrence within seven years.

While episodes of depression in youth last six to nine months on average, in some individuals they may persist for years. Early intervention can reduce the intensity of symptoms and the duration of treatment. Youth with depression who fail to seek help suffer needlessly. Effective treatment is available.

To determine if you or a teen you know may be experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions, you can take a free, anonymous, confidential survey at:  http://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/northern-virginia Depending on the results, you will receive referral information and/or relevant articles on various mental health topics. #IntoMentalHealth
